The Moving Medium: All About Air Flashcards
OAT
Outside Air Temperature
What’s the difference between altitude and height?
Altitude is: Above sea level (ASL)
Height is: Above ground level (AGL)
CAR
Canadian Aviation Regulation
Air Law CAR 605.31 (1)
Oxygen requirements:
- 10,000’ ASL, supplemental oxygen for all crew for 30 minutes along with 10% of passengers
- 13,000’ ASL, supplemental oxygen full time
What is a Datum?
A reference point
ISA
International Standard Atmosphere
What are the compositions of air?
- Nitrogen (N2) 78%
- Oxygen (O2) 21%
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2) 0.4%
- Other Gases 0.96%
What are some properties of air?
- Air has weight
- Air is fluid
- Air always moves from high to low pressure
- Air is viscous
- Air thins at a higher altitude due to gravity

Hg
Mercury
ISA Lapse Rate
- 1” Hg/1000’
- 2°C/1000’
ISA Barometric Pressure
29.92” Hg

ISA Altitude
Sea Level
KTAS
True Air Speed
GPH
Gallons Per Hour
What is less dense, moist air or dry air?
Moist air is less dense because water vapor molecules replace the heavier nitrogen and oxygen molecules in the atmosphere.
PA
Pressure Altitude
How do you calculate PA?
((29.92 - Barometric pressure) x 1000) + cruise altitude)
What is the atmospheric pressure at sea level?
14.7 PSI
