What is Caffeine?
Caffeine is a bitter, white crystalline xanthine alkaloid that acts as a stimulant drug.
SOURCES OF CAFFIENE
Caffiene can be extracted from:
the bean of the coffee plant
the leaves of the tea bush
kola nut
Other sources include yerba maté, guarana berries,
guayusa, and the yaupon holly
caffeine acts as a
central nervous system stimulant, temporarily warding off
drowsiness and restoring alertness.
When is caffeine toxic?
Caffeine is toxic at sufficiently high doses, but
ordinary consumption poses few health risks.
Health effects of caffeine
Restlessness and shakiness.
Insomnia.
Headaches.
Dizziness.
Fast heart rate.
Dehydration.
Anxiety.
Dependency
Symptoms of caffeine overdose in adults may include
Breathing trouble.
Changes in alertness.
Agitation,
Confusion
Hallucinations.
