The Moon & Eclipses Flashcards
What is a moon phase?
A moon phase is the shape of the moon’s sunlit portion as viewed from Earth.
How long does it take for the moon to complete one full cycle of phases?
Approximately 29.5 days.
What occurs during a new moon phase?
The moon appears completely dark from Earth, as it is aligned between the Earth and the sun.
When does a full moon occur?
A full moon occurs when the moon is on the opposite side of Earth from the sun and appears fully lit.
What distinguishes the first and third quarter moons?
Both appear half-lit but are on opposite sides of the Earth in relation to the sun.
What is a lunar eclipse, and when does it occur?
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth casts a shadow on the moon, occurring only during a full moon.
What is the difference between a partial and a total lunar eclipse?
A partial lunar eclipse covers part of the moon, while a total lunar eclipse covers the entire moon.
How does a solar eclipse happen?
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon casts a shadow on Earth, blocking the sun’s light.
What is seen during a total solar eclipse?
The moon fully covers the sun’s disk, revealing the sun’s corona.
Why does the air temperature drop during a solar eclipse?
The moon blocks most of the sun’s energy from reaching that part of Earth, causing a temperature drop.
