The Model Of The Atom Flashcards
What were atoms thought to be before the electron was discovered ?
Tiny spheres that couldn’t be divided.
What famous model of the atom did the discovery of the electron lead to ? Describe this model.
The plum pudding model: the atom is a ball of positive charge with negative electron embedded in it.
Describe the scattering experiment ?
Positively charged alpha particles were fired at thing gold foil. Most of the alpha particles passed straight through. But a few were scattered in different directions.
What did the scattering experiment conclude ?
The mass of an atom is concentrated in the centre (the nucleus) and this nucleus is positively charged. This was called the nuclear model.
How did Niels Bohr adapt the nuclear model ?
He suggested that electrons orbit the nucleus at specific distances.
What evidence did James Chadwick provide about the nucleus of the atoms ?
The nucleus contained neutrons.
