The king kept a quarter of his land this was called his Demensne

They were the kings followers such as a bishop,count and earl

They gave the loyalty to The Lord in return for land

They were the peasants who worked for The lord and could not leave

They wre the peasants who worked for the lord but the coups leave whenever they wanted

The tax people had to give to the church
Open field
There were three fields everyone had a acre or strip of land to grow crops
Bailiff
He kept law and order and collected taxes.
Pastimes
The played games such as noughts and huntsman blind
Motte and Bailey
A castle in which the motte was a hill and the Bailey was an enclosed area at the bottom
Moat
A dug up circle around the castle sometimes filled with water
Keep
The are were the Lord and lady lived
Battlements
They were above the keep were soldiers kept lookout

The outer walls of the castle
Turrets
They were the strong towers around the wall
Drawbridge
It was a wooden door which could be raised at night or if an enemy approached

They ran along the top of the wall and were wide enough for soldiers to walk on

The latrines were the toilets and usually at the corner of the keep
Portcullis
The portcullis was an iron grill that could be lowered in front of the drawbridge

Food served on big slices of bread

A game where two people rode on horseback and tried to hit each other off

When the boy was 7 he lived in a master craftsman house and worked without pay

After seven years the apprentice becomes a journey man travelling around looking for better wages
Master craftsman
To become a master craftsman you had to create a master piece

A style of churches copied from the Romans
Gothic
A very pretty church with spirals and stain glass windows
Flying buttresses
Instead of colums gothic churches were held up with flying buttresses
Dormitory
The dormitory was where all the monks slept
Refectory
The refectory was were the monks ate
Cloister
A walled garden were monks walked and prayed
Scriptorium
This is were monks wrote the manuscripts
Infirmary
This is where the nurses nursed the sick
Chapter house
Were the monks discussed business and elected the Abbot
Novice
This is the first stage in becoming a monk
Tonsure
The hair cut monks had to tell you were a monk

The evening prayers

The night prayers the monks said before they went to bed

The leader of the monks elected by other monks

He looked after the monastery when the about was away

He looked after the poor when they visited

He looked after travellers
Friar
They travelled from place to place working with the poor.
