The Messianic Age Flashcards
What will the messiah be and what will he be able to do
The one who is anointed as king in the end of days (messianic age)
- can bring together all the people of the world
- can rebuild the temple in Jerusalem
- can establish the kingdom of god
What is the messianic age
The time when the messiah comes. Tenakh says that during this time there’ll be peace among all nations, all Jewish people will return to Israel, temple will be rebuilt, the whole world will accept god & Judaism.
Why’s the messianic age belief important
- one of the 13 principles of faith
- Jews pray for the coming of a messiah, return for those forced to leave at the exile, reward to righteousness, rebuilding of temple in jersualem, 3 services a day in the temple
- messiah will bring about the messianic age meaning an age of peace and justice for all.
Orthodox Jews beliefs
- messianic age is the Time when messiah has come and is ruling the world
- the messiah won’t come until everyone is keeping the mitzvot fully
- some rabbi’s believe they know when the messiah will come
- other rabbi’s believe no one knows when the messiah will come only god does
Reform/liberal Jews beliefs
- messianic age will be a better time of peace and harmony
- many reform Jews no longer believe in an individual messiah who will make the world perfect - believe it’s up to Jewish people to change this world, bring nations together, establish justice and peace as the Tenakh predicts
- may not consider messiah as an individual important at all - isnt up to a superhuman to make the world better, its up to us
Yes all Jews should believe the same thing about the messiah - why?
- Tenakh teaches about the messiah and is central to the Jewish faith - all Jews should believe what it says
- the 13 principles say all Jews should believe in the messiah as Maimonides is a respected rabbi n Judaism and all Jews should believe what he teaches
No all Jews shouldnt believe the same thing about the messiah - why?
- Maimonides says no one knows when the messiah will come so with the lack of detail different wil have to have come about
- nothing in the Torah abut the messiah and very little in the rest of the tenakh so since its no clear different opinions will have to have come about
