The Meseta Flashcards

La Mancha

A

Plateau high above sea level, centred on Madrid. Hot, dry and extremely continental climate. Soils tend to be dry and hard with shallow, stony topsoil. Low density bush trained vines, low trained so leaf canopy protects fruit and cools surrounding ground. Irrigation has been permitted since 1986. Recent move to pick up to two weeks earlier to retain acidity and fruit characters. Recent recognition of potential has led to investment from the EU, now stainless steel and cool fermentation are prominent. Airen is the single most planted grape variety in the world and makes up the bulk of plantings in La Mancha. Neutral, light wine (much is distilled for Brandy de Jerez production). New plantings of Tempranillo, Cabenet Sauvignon and Syrah

Valdepenas

A

Enclave in South La Mancha, small plain surrounded by hills. Similar climate to rest of La Mancha Limestone based soils with good water retention during the hot summer. Shallow yellow or white topsoil. Some patches of alluvial soil. Many wineries in the city, meaning grapes needed to be transported in hot conditions for processing. Now several wineries built closer proximity to the vineyards. Modern temperature control methods used. White wine must be 100% Airen. Rosado will generally be a blend of red varieties. Joven and Crianza have a minimum 20% Cencibel (Tempranillo), some Airen can be added to the blend. Reservas and Gran Reservas are 100% Cencibel. Young reds often made using carbonic maceration, to preserve fruity characters. Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva will be aged in old American oak barrels. Resulting wines have good structure and full body with ageing potential. Best wines are high quality at a reasonable price.
