What is the duration of Section 2?
28 days
What is the Section 2 indicated for?
Assessment of suspected psychiatric disorder (treatment can be given against the patient’s will – as this is considered part of the assessment process)
What is the duration of Section 3?
6 months but can be renewed
What is Section 3 indicated for?
Treatment of a diagnosed psychiatric disorder
What is the duration of section 4?
72 hours with view of converting to section 2 or 3 if required
When is Section 4 indicated?
Admission in an emergency situation where it is not feasible to arrange a Section 2 at the time
Duration of Section 5(2)
72 hours with view of converting to section 2 or 3 if required
What is Section 5(2) used for?
Prevents a patient from leaving a hospital putting themselves or others at risk – only used in inpatient environment not in emergency or outpatient departments
Duration of Section 5(4)
6 hours - detains the patient until a doctor is available
What is the Supervised Community Treatment Order or ‘CTO’?
Compulsory treatment of psychiatric patients who have already been detained under section 3 and have had cycles of relapse and struggle with compliance.
