The Meninges and Dura mater folds Flashcards
what is the function of the meninges
protective coverings of brain and spinal cord
what are the different types meninges, in order from most external to internal
dura mater, arachnoid mater, subarachnoid space, pia mater
what lies within the dura mater and what does it enclose
sensory supply for the CNS and it encloses dural venous system
what is found in the arachnoid mater
arachnoid granules
where is the pia mater found
it adheres to the brain, as well as the nerves and vessels leaving and entering
where is the subarachnoid space found
in between the arachnoid and pia maters
what is contained within the subarachnoid space
circulating CSF
where can the subarachnoid space be accessed from
via lumbar puncture L3/4 or L4/5
where does the subarachnoid space end
level S2
what other CSF filled space in the brain does the subarachnoid space communicate with
the ventricles
what are the 4 main folds of the dura mater
falx cerbri, tenorium cerebelli, falx cerebelli and diaphragm sellae
describe the role of falx cerebri and fealx cerebelli
falx cerberi = divides the 2 hemispheres of the brain
falx cereblli = divides the 2 hemispheres of the ceribellum
describe the role of the tentorium cerebelli and the tentorial notch
tentorial cerebelli = tent over cerebellum, dividing brain into supra and infra-tentorial compartments
tentorial notch = free edge of tentorial cerebelli
where is the diaphragm sellae found
cover over roof of pituitary, with pituitary stalk passing through it
what can happen in raised ICP between the spaces of the dura mater folds
brain can herniate through them
