The eucharist is a communion with Christ, whose body and blood are actually present in the bread and wine.

The pope needed political and military protection; the emperor needed divine sanction (religious protection)

The view of the papacy was elevated; the successor of Peter was thought to be below God, but above man.

Full forgiveness of past sins by the pope.
