Armitage explores the intimate and loving nature of a young and new relationship, through “passionate night … intimate days” suggesting that a relationship is at it’s most physical when it begins to blossom.

Armitage emphasises the emotional journey that the couple have to travel in order to regain there loving nature between one and other, through the verb “trace”, which creates a sense of discovery and also mystery.
“of his grazed heart”
Armitage uses the ambiguous metaphor “grazed heart” to highlight the dual nature of the damage, which has left its mark both physically, and, possibly more permanent, emotionally.
“Then, and only then, did I come close”
Armitage implies that the journey has been long and troubling, yet, through the strength of the love they have for each other, they have finished the journey and she has found the man she knew and loved.
