The Male And Female Reproductive System Flashcards
What are the 10 parts of the male reproductive system?
Testes Epididymis Vas defferens and efferens Prostate gland Seminal vesicle Urethra Penis Instertitial cells Sertoli cells
What is the function of the scrotum and testes?
Scrotum holds testes
Testes contains seminiferous tumbles where spermatogenesis occurs
What is the function of the epididymis and vas efferens/defferens?
Epididymis: where spermatozoa mature
Vas efferens: carries sperm from seminiferous tubules to epididymis
Vas defferens: carries sperm from the epididymis to urethra
What is the function of the prostate gland?
Produces an alkaline solution that neutralises urine and acidity of the vagina, also zinc and amino acids
What is the function of the seminal vesicle?
Releases mucus and a secretion that aids sperm mobility
What is the function of the urethra and penis?
Urethra: tube carrying urine and a sperm out of the body
Penis: organ that inserts spermatozoa into female reproductive system
What are the 4 parts of the female reproductive system?
Ovary
Oviduct
Uterus (endometrium, myometrium, perimetrium)
Vagina
What is the function of the ovary?
Where oogenesis happens - oocytes mature in follicles which develop from cells in the germinal epithelium around the periphery.
What is the function of the oviduct?
Site of fertilisation where spermatozoon fuses with the oocyte. A fertilisation a zygote is formed which moves down the oviduct to the uterus.
What is the function of the uterus?
Embryo implants here and has 3 layers. The embryo continues to develop in the uterus.
What is the function of the vagina?
During sexual inter course the sperm are inserted at the top of the vagina.
There is cilia called fenestrae at the entrance to the oviducts, and the oviducts are made of ciliated epithelium. What is the function of this?
To sweep the secondary oocyte out and down to the uterus
