The Lymphatic System- Normal and abnormal appearances Flashcards
What is the immune system?
It is the bodies first line of defence.
First line (non specific)
Skin and mucous membranes.
Inflammation
Phagocytes
Second line (specific and adaptive)
Specific lymphocyte cells and antibodies.
These are capable of:
Being specific to 1 antigen
Retaining a memory of known antigens
Terminology
Resistance – the ability to ward off disease
Susceptibility – a lack of resistance
Antigen – any substance that causes an immune response
Immunity and the lymphatic system
Microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites) are known as pathogens.
Each pathogen interacts with the body in a characteristic way
viruses exist within cells which they eventually destroy
Bacteria multiply in the interstitial fluids
Parasites burrow through internal organs
The lymphatic system includes cells, tissues and organs.
The primary cells are lymphocytes.
The immune system is a physiological system including the lymphatic, cardiovascular, integumentary, respiratory and digestive systems
What is the lymphatic system and what are lymph nodes?
Your lymphatic system is a network pf tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials.
It plays a crucial role in immunity by-
transporting lymph – fluid containing infection fighting white blood cells through the body
lymph nodes – small bean shaped structures that filter lymph and trap pathogens. They contain B and T cells that respond to infection organs of the thymus and spleen to mature T cells and filter the blood, bone marrow to produce new blood cells
