The Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is lymph?
Lymph is the fluid that circulates throughout the lymphatic system.
What is the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system is part of the circulatory system, comprising a network of conduits called lymphatic vessels that carry a clear fluid called lymph directionally towards the heart.
What are lymph nodes?
A lymph node or lymph gland is an oval-shaped organ of the immune system, distributed widely throughout the body including the armpit and stomach and linked by lymphatic vessels.
What are lymph vessels?
The lymph vessels (or lymphatic vessels) are thin walled, valved structures that carry lymph.
What are lymphatic capillaries?
Lymph capillaries or lymphatic capillaries are tiny thin-walled vessels that are closed at one end and are located in the spaces between cells throughout the body, except in the central nervous system, and in non-vascular tissues.
What is one relationship between lymph and blood plasma?
One relationship between lymph and plasma is that lymph is generally recycled into plasma.
What is the cycle of lymph?
The lymph is formed when the interstitial fluid (the fluid which lies in the interstices of all body tissues) is collected through lymph capillaries. It is then transported through lymph vessels to lymph nodes before emptying ultimately into the right or the left subclavian vein, where it mixes back with blood.
