What was a big focus of the nineteenth century culture?
Greatness became a huge thing. Great pieces, great artists etc. There was a shift from the acknowledgement of excellence to the recognition of greatness.
Why did Greatness come about?
It flourished in the ancient world and was reinvented (partly through the mediation of Islamic culture) for the makers of renaissance humanism.
What were the composers doing socially?
In an age of revolution, an age of liberalism and nationalism, the composer was able to compose pieces that were constantly stretching the boundaries of existing conventions and pushing music forwards.
What was Beethoven the epitome of in the 19th century?
The engaged or committed artist who expressed through music his affinity with the radical, humanitarian thought of the ago of revolution.
