Cause 1 - The unravelling of the Grand Alliance after WWII
Although the members of the Grand Alliance agreed on many issues at Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam, byt the end of 1945, it was clear that there were now significant issues they could not agree on. In particular, Stalin wanted control of Eastern Europe to ensure the security of the USSR but Truman saw this as aggressive spreading of communism. Therefore, a feeling of distrust and even animosity meant that communications like the Long Telegram in February, 1946 were more likely.
Cause 2 - The impact of the Atomic bomb meant fears on both sides of military war were increased.
On 6th August, 1945 and then on 9th August, the USA dropped atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing over 120,000 Japanese civilians. Many people believed that the USA could have won the war against Japan without using atom bombs but that they dropped them
