the logical problem of evil Flashcards
basics
deductive, a priori
based on the incompatibility of the existence of evil and the attributes of god.
if correct proves that god does not exist
god either wishes to take away evil and is unable or he is able and unwilling
the logical problem of evil claims that believers are committed to holding an inconsistent set of beliefs: that god is omnipotent that god is wholly god and that evil exists.
for Mackie believes must hold all three to be true but at the same time cant hold all three to be true because they are contradictory.
the logical problem in standard form
p1 god is omnipotent supremely good an omniscient
p2 an omnipotent being can eliminate evil completely
p3 a supremely good being wants to eliminate evil completely
p4 an omniscient being knows that evil exists
conc 1 therefore if god exists then god will eliminate evil completely
p5 evil exists
conc2 therefore a supremely good omniscient omnipotent god does not exist.
criticism- plantinga
plantinga disagrees with the claim that believers think that god will eliminate evil completely.
there may be an even greater good which god intends for human beings and which the existence of evil enables. this greater good might be giving human free will or it might be developing morally and spiritually as a human.
