The living world Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
a community of of plants and animals that interact with one another and their environments
What is a biome?
a large scale ecosystem
What do all ecosystems have?
- biotic components
- abiotic components
What does abiotic mean?
non living things like soil types and air temperature
What does biotic mean?
living organisms in an ecosystem
What are consumers?
organisms that generate energy from feeding on other organisms
What are decomposers?
fungi and bacteria that break down organic material
What is a producer?
produces its own food through converting the suns energy
What is a food chain?
shows how energy flows
What is a food web?
multiple interconnected food chains
What is biodiversity?
variety of plants and animals living in a given area
What are nutrient cycles?
nutrients move from the environment into living organisms and recycled back to the environment
What are three nutrient stores in a deciduous forest?
- litter
- biomass
- soil
How does air circulate?
between high and low pressure
What direction do winds blow?
towards low pressure and away from high pressure
