Q

Describe the adaptations in the rainforest.

A
  1. Lianas - Vines/roots that dangle to absorb nutrients from the air and water.
  2. Epiphytes - Cling to trees and climb to sunlight.
  3. Drip Tip Leaves - Shed water quickly, conical shape, waxy leaves.
  4. Buttress Roots - Large roots to stabilise tree and get lots of nutrients.

A
  1. Forest floor - 2% of sunlight, bottom of rainforest.
  2. Under canopy
  3. Canopy - Highest biodiversity of species.
  4. Emergent layer - 100% sunlight, highest layer.

Q

What is commercial hardwood logging?

A

A threat to the Amazon, material from the rainforest being sold. It destroys 5 million hectares every year, and pays international debt. There is a high demand for timber.
