the limbic system Flashcards
What are the functions of the Amygdala
Emotions: processing and regulating fear, anxiety, joy, and others; meaning to emotions to provide a reaction or response to danger or stress to fight-or-flight.
Cognition: recognizes emotions in facial expressions; modulates pain (“pain matrix”) and acts on pain response. Risk-taking decisions.
Memories: Flashbulb memories, attach memories to emotions. Aids in long-term potentiation to increasing learning and memory formation.
what is the Allostatic Load Model?
The amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal are the primary mediators to determine a threat (a stressful event) resulting in the the physiological and behavioral responses to stress
What dxs have been noted with pts with Kulver- Bucy syndrome with lesion to amygdala?
social anxiety, anxiety, MDD, PTSD, autism, substance use dx.
What dx has been linked to the reduced volume of the anterior cingulate cortex
MDD
What modalities helped increase the volume of the anterior cingulate cortex, thus improving sxs of depression?
CBT
What will happen if the cingulate cortex is damaged
people experience pain but are not emotionally distressed by the pain
what are the functions of the cingulate cortex
motivation, memory, emotions, and emotional reaction to pain.
What are the functions of the Hippocampus?
MEMORY! transfers declarative memory from STM to LTM; Spatial memory
What would happen if the hippocampus is damaged
impairs episodic memory and spatial navigation (linked with Alzheimer’s). Retrieval of declarative memories is impaired when damaged or exposed to high stress and high cortisol levels (seen in Cushing’s).
What dxs are likely to be seen if there is hippocampus abnormalities
MDD, Bipolar, schizo, and PTSD.
