"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" - Part 3 Review Flashcards
After Ichabod passed the tulip tree, what “new perils” awaited him?
- A brook that laid across the road
- Wiley’s Swamp
- A few logs served as the bridge across the brook
What was significant about Wiley’s Swamp and the log bridge?
This was exactly where Major Andre was captured.
How are Wiley’s Swamp and the log bridge regarded by the townspeople?
Severely haunted and frightening.
Ichabod kicked his horse in the ribs, ordering him to cross the log bridge. What did the horse do instead?
Jerked to the side, and ran alongside the fence.
Ichabod tried to kick his horse again, but what happened then?
The steed was plunged into the opposite side of the road into a thicket of bushes and shrubbery.
Ichabod then kicked and whipped Gunpowder, and then what did the horse do?
Dashed forward, sniffling and snorting, but stopped at the edge of the “bridge.”
What are all the delays of the horse doing to Ichabod mentally?
Making him even more nervous and terrified of the scene around him/the situation he is in.
After the bridge ordeal, what happened that caught Ichabod’s eye/ear?
On the side of a brook, a large shape manifested itself and seemed to want to pounce on Ichabod.
What did Ichabod know was useless?
Running away from the possible ghost, ghoul, or goblin in front of him.
What does Ichabod say to the monster?
“Who are you?”
When Ichabod received no answer, what did Ichabod begin to do?
Sing a psalm tune, very loudly and passionately, to try and calm himself down.
What did the figure do when Ichabod started singing the psalm tune?
Stirred into motion and placed itself right in the middle of the road, blocking Ichabod’s path.
Describe the appearance of the figure that can not totally, but somewhat, be observed?
- A horseman of large dimensions (strongly-built)
- A powerful black horse.
How is Gunpowder now acting?
Calm and easy to control.
Ichabod begins to quicken Gunpowder’s stride to get away from the “midnight companion,” but what happens?
The companion does the same, and quickens his pace. When Ichabod then slows down, in the same way, the companion also slows.
What does Ichabod finally see of his traveling “companion”? What does this mean?
That his “companion” is headless; Ichabod is being hunted/haunted by the Headless Horseman!
Where was the horseman’s head, instead of on his shoulders?
On his pommel (on the saddle of the horse).
Ichabod Crane’s fear became desperation (in trying to get away from the Headless Horseman). When he kicked Gunpowder, attempting to make him move, what happened?
The Headless Horseman began to “jump” right along with Ichabod.
