The Leaf Flashcards
Waxy Cuticle
Clear which allows light to enter, reduces evaporation of water
Epidermis Upper
Provides protection from viruses and bacteria by providing another layer
Epidermis Lower
Contains stomata allowing gases to move in and out of leaf
Palisade Mesophyll
Tightly packed with lots of chloroplasts so photosynthesis can occur, upright positioning allowing light to enter
Spongy mesophyll
Loosely packed so gases can diffuse in between cells, space for gas exchange, irregular shapes
Air spaces
Allows movement of gases between cells
Veins – xylem
Carrys water, long, thin tubes with no proper end walls
Veins – Phloem
Carrys glucose, sieve tubes with sieve plates in between them
Stomata
- Pores to allow movement of gases in and out of leaf
Guard cell
Opens and closes stomata
Chloroplasts
- Contains chlorophyll, main site of photosynthesis
