What does criminal law relate to?
Crimes - Investigated by the police or another authority (e.g.: council) - Punished by the courts
What is civil law used for?
Settle disputes between individuals or groups
Give examples of criminal law
Carrying a weapon, Drugs, Racial Crime, Selling tobacco or alcohol, Smoking/drinking in public
What type of weapon are you allowed to carry in the UK?
None - it is a criminal offence to carry a weapon of any kind?
Are you allowed to carry a weapon for self-defence?
No
Is it legal to buy drugs in the UK?
No - it’s a criminal offence to sell or buy drugs including cannabis
Can you be imprisoned for causing someone distress because of their ethnic origin?
Yes - hate/racial crimes are a criminal offence.
What is the legal age you can sell tobacco to someone?
18 years old
What is the legal age an off-license can sell alcohol to?
18 years old
Are 16 year olds allowed to drink alcohol with their meal in a hotel or restaurants?
Yes - however this is an exception. It is otherwise illegal to sell/serve alcohol to anyone under the age of 18
Is the police allowed to confiscate alcohol off you?
Yes - and they can fine or arrest you for drinking in an area that has been designated as alcohol free
