The flowers- Tall, beautiful, gives the boardinghouse a warm feeling. Chrysanthemums are used as funeral flowers in Europe. the price of the room- Affordable and Billy couldn’t pass up on a good offer. The LL made the room rate cheap so that she could guarantee another guest.

She was slightly dotty, seemed nice and familiar like a mom of a friend he had. - She is a crazy old lady who poisons and stuffs her pets. The fate of her guest is to be poisoned and stuffed.
How is mood developed in this story?
Mood of the story is set up by the descriptions of the weather. The air was deadly cold and the wind was like a flat blade of ice.
What do boarding houses remind billy of?
Boarding houses remind Billy of watery cabbage, and rapacious landladies.
direct and indirect characterization
Direct characterization- character’s personality and tells the reader what the character is like.
Indirect characterization- character’s personality is revealed through descriptions of their actions, speech, appearance, and interactions with other characters.
Foreshadowing
The two names in the register (guest book) are familiar to Billy. This foreshadows something bad will happen to Billy. Billy will die like the other guests who have NEVER left the B&B. Billy realizes he is in danger after the LL says the other guests never left.
How does the author prepare the reader for the surprise ending?
Foreshadowing:
Billy will die - no guest in 2 yrs, stuffed pets, tea tastes like almonds, other two guests supposedly went missing.
