The Lactate System Flashcards
1
Q
What is the purpose of the lactate system
A
To use glycogen or glucose to restore ATP in the muscle cells
2
Q
What type of energy system is the lactate system
A
Anaerobic glycolysis
3
Q
What is the fuel source for the lactate system
A
Glycogen
4
Q
What is the duration for the lactate system
A
Approx 10 secs to 2mins
5
Q
What is the recovery time for the lactate system
A
1-2 hours
6
Q
In which sports would the lactate system be used
A
Stop/start games, field and court sports
7
Q
What are the steps in the lactate system
A
- ATP requires resynthesizing
- Glycogen is present in the muscle cell and in the liver
- Glucose is broken down to provide the energy required
- Pyruvate is produced as a by product, breaks down into lactate
- One Glycogen molecule produces 3 new ATP molecules
8
Q
What are the benefits/disadvantages of the lactate system
A
Benefits
- no oxygen required
- greater production of ATP than ATP-PC system
- lasts longer than ATP-PC system
Disadvantages
- Lasts for a few minutes at most
- very high level of muscle acidity using this system
- may interfere with muscle contraction
- may stop enzymes working
