origins of the Labour Party
founded in 1900 as the political arm of the trade union movement in order to give it representation in parliament, over the years it has moderated its policies. aims to creat an equal and classless society
labour and socialism in the 1945 to 1983 period
for most of the post war period it called itself a socialist party. it created the welfare stats and the NHS advocated higher taxes on the rich and for nationalisation. strong link with trade unions and most support coming from the working class
1979-1997 labour period
1979-83 saw party move further to the left under Michael foot. in 1983 party was heavily defeated in general election - worst ever election result
from 83-97 it gradually abandoned some of its traditional socialist policies. advocated a third way. biggest ever election win in 97
