- Forces of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea advanced into the South and reached a perimeter point close to Pusan. - Chinese troops were massed in Manchuria in readiness for a move into Korea - Through the UN, 29 states committed to military, economic or medical aid.

- MacArthur landed at Inchon and succeeded in forcing North Korea n forces back across the 38th parallel - In Oct, Mao sent 300,000 Chinese troops across Yalu river into North Korea - This led to a major counter attack against the UN forces

- By January, Chinese forces had pushed across the 38th parallel and captured Seoul - In Feb, the UN condemned China as an aggressor - MacArthur was dismissed by Truman because he wanted to use air strike and nuclear weapons against the Chinese - By June, the USA was indicating to China and the USSR of its willingness to negotiate a ceasefire

What happened during phase 4 of the war?
- Neither side had mounted any significant military offensives during this period. The lack of UN action convinced Mao and Stalin that there was a genuine desire for peace - The USA had consolidated it's relationship with Japan and felt more secure in its involvement in the far East - A natural disinclination to cooperate and protracted negotiations on post-war prisoner release arrangements led to long delays in reaching a final settlement
