The Kidneys Flashcards
How can water be lost?
- skin -sweat
- lungs-exhalation
- kidneys-urine
Hat happens if there is too much or too little water?
Cells don’t function correctly
What happens to amino acids in the liver?
Deaminated to form ammonia
What is selectively re absorbed ?
- water
- some ions
- glucose
What is removed by th body in urine ?
- urea
- ions
- water
What is the process called when the body fitted out waste products?
Filtration
What is the process when useful products are re absorbed back into the blood stream?
Selective reabsorption
What is the kidneys work controlled by?
A hormone called ADH
Why does ADH stand for?
Anti-duretic hormone
What release ADH ?
The pituitary gland
What does more ADH mean?
More water is re absorbed
What does less ADH mean ?
Less water is re absorbed
What does ADH do?
Informs the kidney of how much water to reabsorb
What do kidneys do?
Remove waste substances from the blood
How is kidney failure treated?i
- Transplant
* dialysis
If more ADH is released what does the urine look like?
- smaller volume
- more concentrated eg darker
How long does dialysis take ?
- 3 times a week
* 3-4houra
How does kidney dialysis work?
-blood passes through a partially permeable membrane
Surrounded by dialysis fluids
Membrane is permeable to ions and waste substances but no big molecules like proteins
What is dialysis fluid?
Like blood it has the same concentration of dissolved ions and glucose as healthy blood
How are products removed from the boood?
Diffusion
What is the risk with a kidney transplant?
It will be rejected
Blood types must be matched - more time
