the kidney and nephron Flashcards
what is the cortex
it is a part of the kidney that encircles it
what is the medulla
it is a part of the kidney that is found beneath the cortex
what is the pelvis
it is a hollow chamber which joins the kidney with ureter
what does the liver do when forming urea
it removes an amine group from proteins, forming ammonia, the liver combines the ammonia with carbon dioxide to form urea.
what does the kidney do with the urea
it filters out the urea and uric acid from the blood
what do nephrons do
they are the functional units of kidney
how do the nephrons work
tiny afferent arterioles give blood to nephrons, arterioles branch into a capillary bed known as glomerulus, blood leaves via efferent arterioles, they then enter the Bowmans capsule wherein the fluids to be processed enter and not the blood cells, the capsule becomes thin called the proximal tubule into the loop of Henle, the distal tubule, and lastly the collecting duct.
