Was an iron grille that could lowered. In front of the gate .
Ramparts
Ran along the top of all the walls.the were wide enough for the soldiers to walk in.
Moat
Was the ditch around the castle that was filled of water.often it was part of a nearby river or stream.
Courtyard/bailey
In front of the keep was a open space called the courtyard or bailey in Ireland it was also called a bawn.
Latrines
We’re the toilets of the castle.they were usually in the corner of one of the towers in the keep.
Motte
It was built on a very small hill.

Fair green
The highlight of the year was the annual fair which was held on the fair green outside the walls.
Toll
Tolls were a tax that people had to pay at the town’s gates.
Curfew
The houses were made out of wood so there was strict rules about fire safety at sunset the church bells rang to mark the arrival of the curfew .
Leprosy
People seldom washed them selfs they all had fleas many suffer from skin diseases common one leprosy.
Black Death
The streets were very dirty black rats came aboard ships and infected people with diseases people would of died very quickly.
Plague
A plague raged in Europe,which is thought to wipe out one third of the population.
Charter
A legal document granted by the king that allowed people to run there own towns.
Corporation
Under the charter,the citizens could elect a council or corporation to run their towns.
Keep
Was the main building in the castle.this was where The Lord and lady and there family and soldiers lived.the windows were narrow so the enemy’s could fire or get in.
Guilds
Every crafts person who worked in a town had to belong to a guild.There was a baker’s guild,a carpenter’s guild and so on.
