What do superior judges have in regards to dismissal?
Security of tenure.
What does security of tenure mean?
Superior judges can only be removed by the king if a petition is presented to him by both houses of parliament.
How are inferior judges dismissed?
By the Lord Chancellor under the Courts Act 1971 for misbehaviour or inability.
What does judicial independence mean?
Judges make decisions based on the law without outside influence.
What are the 5 ways in which judicial independence is protected?
Security of tenure
Immunity from suit
Independent from executive, legislature and parties
What does immunity from suit mean?
Judges can’t be sued for decisions they make during work.
What is an advantage of judicial independence?
Provides a safeguard against government abuse of power.
What is the composition of the judiciary mainly?
White, male, middle and upper class people.
