The Journey Inside Flashcards
What are the four main components of modern computing?
Input, storage, processing, and output.
Who were the designer and programmer of the first calculating machines?
Charles Babbage and his wife Ada
What are microprocessors?
They can perform many different tasks, depending on what the software instructs them to do.
What are electrons?
Electrons are negatively charged particles in atoms. If there are more electrons at one end of a conductor than another, then the electrons will jump from one atom to another to flow and fix the imbalance.
What is the load on a circuit?
It is what is taking the electricity - such as the light bulb in a flashlight, or the monitor and processors in a computer.
What are insulators and conductors?
Insulators have high resistance and do not allow electrons to pass, whereas conductors have conductivity and allow the passage of electrons.
What is a transistor?
It is a non-physical switch made with semi-conductive silicon. It will be conductive when certain conditions are met, but not other times.
What are the 3 main parts of a microprocessor?
Fetch, decode, and execute.
How many transistors can fit on the head of a pin?
Millions.
What is a micron?
One millionth of a meter.
How long does it take to make a microprocessor?
~2 months
What is Moore’s law?
The number of transistors on a microprocessor will double every 18 months.
What does HTML stand for? What is it?
Global hypertext project. It is the coding language of the internet.
What does URL stand for?
Uniform resouce locator.
What is a router?
It is a device that determines the best route for information transmission (packets).
