John Adams
American states man, he was a delegate to the Continental Congress, a member of the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence, Vice President to George Washington, and the second president of the United States.
Thomas Jefferson
American states man, and member of two Continental Congress, chairman of the committee to draft the Declaration of Independence, the Declarations main author and one of its signers, and the third president of the United States.
John Marshall
Federalist leader who served in the House of Representatives and as U.S. Secretary of State, he later became the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, establishing in Marburg v. Madison the Supreme Courts power of judicial review.
Marburg v. Madison
A case that helped establish the Supreme Courts power to check the power of the other branches of government.
Judicial review
The power to declare an act of Congress unconstitutional.
Louisiana Purchase
On October 20, 1803, the Senate approved the Louisiana Purchase agreement, which roughly doubled the size of the United States.
Lewis and Clark expedition
In May 1804 the Lewis and Clark expedition began its long journey to explore the Louisiana Purchases.
William Clark
American Solider and friend of Meriwether Lewis, he was invited to explore the Louisiana Purchase and joined what became known as the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Meriwether Lewis
Former army captain selected by President Jefferson to explore the Louisiana Purchase, he led the expedition that became known as the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Zebulon Pike
Army officer sent on a mission to explore the West, he was ordered to fined the headwaters of the Red River. He attempted to climb what in now known as Pikes Peaks in Colorado.
Sacagawea
Shoshone woman who, along with her French fur trapper husband, accompanied and aided Lewis and Clark on their expedition.

Or the practice of forcing people to serve in the army or navy.
Embargo
Or the banning of trade.
Embargo Act
In late 1807 Congress passed the Embargo Act. The law essentially banned trade with all foreign countries.
