The Integumentary System Flashcards
What does the integumentary system consist of?
The integumentary system consists of skin and its accessory organs.
What is the largest organ in the body?
The skin is the largest organ in your body.
What is the primary function of the skin?
Your skin is the first line of defense.
What are the accessory organs of the integumentary system?
Accessory organs include hair follicles, nails, and skin glands.
List the functions of the integumentary system.
Functions include protection, body temperature regulation, vitamin D production, sensation, and excretion.
What are the layers of the skin?
The layers of the skin are the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.
What is the epidermis associated with?
The epidermis is associated with first degree burns.
What is the dermis associated with?
The dermis is associated with second degree burns.
What is the hypodermis associated with?
The hypodermis is associated with third degree burns.
What is alopecia?
Alopecia results in hair loss.
What is cellulitis?
Cellulitis is inflammation of connective tissue in the skin.
What is dermatitis?
Dermatitis is inflammation of skin or a rash.
What is eczema?
Eczema is a chronic dermatitis.
What is folliculitis?
Folliculitis is inflammation of hair follicles.
What are herpes simplex types?
Herpes simplex includes type 1 and type 2.
What is herpes zoster?
Herpes zoster is commonly known as shingles.
What is impetigo?
Impetigo is characterized by oozing skin lesions that eventually crust over.
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an inherited autoimmune disorder.
What is scabies?
Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by mites.
What determines skin color?
Skin color is determined by the amount of melanin in the epidermis.
How does melanin affect skin color?
The more melanin, the darker the skin color.
What is basal cell carcinoma?
Basal cell carcinoma progresses slowly and rarely spreads to other body parts.
What are the characteristics of basal cell carcinoma?
It may present as a new growth or sore that will not heal, and can be waxy, smooth, red, pale, flat, or lumpy.
What are the treatments for basal cell carcinoma?
Treatments include curettage and electrodessication, Mohs surgery, cryosurgery, and laser therapy.
What is squamous cell carcinoma?
Squamous cell carcinoma is more likely to spread to surrounding tissues.
What are the treatments for squamous cell carcinoma?
Treatments are the same as for basal cell carcinoma.
What is malignant melanoma?
Malignant melanoma is more aggressive and can occur anywhere on the body.
Where do malignant melanomas typically appear?
They appear on the trunk, head, neck of men, and on arms and legs of women.
What are the symptoms of malignant melanoma?
Malignant melanoma may itch or bleed.
What are the treatments for malignant melanoma?
Treatments include surgery and biopsy, removal of cancerous lymph nodes, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy.
What are the stages of melanoma?
Stages include Stage 0 (only in epidermis), Stage I (spread to epidermis and dermis), Stage II (2 to 4 mm thick plus ulceration), Stage III (spread to lymph nodes), and Stage IV (spread to other organs or distant lymph nodes).
What is the ABCD rule for evaluating melanoma?
A - Asymmetry, B - Border irregularity, C - Color changes, D - Diameter larger than a pencil.
