The true definition of the job title “Coatings Inspector” is subject to dispute but it is now quite evident that coatings inspectors must seek education to become certified in all fields that relate to the hugely varied work expectations performed on a daily basis. Examples of duties include:
Scaffold inspection, containment, basic safety inspection, and waste management. To further complicate matters, application contractors have their own expectations of what a coatings inspector should do.
Many owners today require additional documented training/certifications in addition to the primary qualifications. The good news is that most inspectors noted the trend, recognized the need to obtain additional training and did it.
There is a troubling trend developing in which some coatings inspectors seem to now think of themselves as corrosion engineers and project managers, without having the necessary training, experience, or qualifications.
Even more troubling is that some assume management roles and become part of the decision making process by default. Usually this goes unnoticed by the owner until something goes wrong, and the questions begin.
Coatings inspectors should stay within their area of expertise to avoid and/or reduce liabilities to their employers.

The key to success in the midst of such change is tolerance, coupled with the knowledge that contractors and supervisors with a good grasp of the requirements goes a long way to creating a more harmonious and stress free project.
