The Inquiry Model Flashcards
The Inquiry Model Steps
- Identify a problem or question
- Develop a hypothesis
- Gather data
- Analyze the data
- Draw conclusions
The Inquiry Model
A process of inquiry - an investigation that follows a formal procedure
Research Methods
- Case studies
- Experiments
- Sample surveys
- Interviews
- Observation
Data Analysis
Process that involves three steps:
1. Data should be separated between relevant and irrelevant
2. Data should be organized in a way that is clear
3. Should be analyzed in terms of how it supports, or fails to support, the hypothesis
Drawing Conclusions
A conclusion is an answer to a question being asked.
Based on the hypothesis, conclusions can be divided into 4 categories:
1. The evidence supports the hypothesis
2. There is some evidence in support of the hypothesis
3. The evidence does not support the hypothesis
4. The evidence supports an alternative hypothesis
The three general tests used to confirm the value of a study
objectivity, relevance and validity
Dr. Potti
He discovered a method in which he could match cancer treatments specifically to the person and tumor. It was described as the holy grail of cancer.
Issue with Dr. Potti
Two research doctors kept finding errors in Dr. Potti’s research. They found that Potti’s data would potentially be giving patients the worst type of treatment instead of the best.
The study continued despite research against it
The study finally stopped because they found that Potti lied about credentials on his resume
Elizabeth Holmes
- She promised she could blood test people with a small prick of a finger
- She promised she could deliver results in just a few hours. However, the product she created was not ready to be used by consumers and the technology was not advanced enough.
- The test results were forged and inaccurate
