What are the causes of the 1857 rebellion?

A
  • The sepoys were being treated unfairly
  • Some sepoys felt as if they were being pressured into converting to Christianity.
  • 85 sepoys were arrested because they refused to use the new cartridge.

What was wrong with the new cartridges?

A

To use the you had to tear of the greased paper at the end of the cartridge. However it was rumoured that the paper was greased with animal fat which went against the sepoys religious beliefs.

How did the British punish the sepoys?

A
  • By blowing the rebels from the barrel of a gun.

- Muslims were sown into the pig skins and hung and others were forced to clean blood of the floor by licking it.

Why were the punishments so brutal?

A

The British wanted revenge as the sepoys had murdered 200 british women and children in the rebellion.

How did Britain change the way they ruled India in 1856?

A
  • They didn’t interfere with religion and religious beliefs.
  • They allowed Indians to have more say in how india was ruled.
  • More Indians were allowed to have jobs in the indian government.
