An affection for or emotional ownership of a particular place.
When is localism prominent?
Rarely in a political sense but can be seen when people are reluctant to have their local area affected by development.
What is regionalism?
Consciousness of, and loyalty to, a distinct region.
What is nationalism?
Loyalty and devotion to a nation which creates a sense of national consciousness.
Historically, why have people identified more with their local place or community?
They have greater knowledge of the area and people.
How is identity with a place strengthened?
A common language, national anthem, flag, sporting events, cultural events and religion.
What does it mean to ‘belong’ in the context of place?
To be apart of the community.
What is belonging a key factor for?
Makes a place sustainable and successful.
What has belonging caused regeneration schemes to do?
Focus as much of the social environment as on the built environment.
What can sense of belonging to a place be influenced by?
Age, Gender, Sexuality, Socio-economic status, Religion, Race, Ethnicity and Level of Education.
