How do form the imperfect tense?

Answer 1

To say what used to happen, was happening

Start with the ‘nous’ part of the Present tense
Take away the ‘ nous’ and the -ons ending. This leaves the Imperfect stem.
Add the correct ending depending on the subject of the verb.

There is only one set of endings for all 3 verb types (-er, -re and -ir verbs).

There is only one irregular verb stem - être > été
