Native Societies
The impact of Scottish settlers on Maori life was often negative. As well as being involved in land deals that took land from the Maori. Many Scots wanted to farm and this led to the clearance of trees from land. which had an impact on the traditional life of the Maori. In 1872 conflict brake our between the Maori and settlers. However, some Scots were more sympathetic to the
plight of the Maori. Donald Maclean learned the native language and rose to
become the Native Minister from 1877 to 1880. In this role he ensured that settlers purchased their land from Maori chiefs at a fair price and of their own free will.
