The Iliad: FATE Flashcards
What are Achilleus’ two fates
- if he stays in Troy to fight, he shall die, but he will have glory
- if he heads back home, he’ll live a long life, but without glory
Why does Nestor proclaim that ‘the fate of all Achaians stands balanced on a razor’s edge’? (book 10)
Because the Trojans were camping closer to the Achaians - especially closer to their ships.
Zeus: “Do I snatch [Sarpedon] out of the ruinous fighting…?”
Why does Hera get angry at Zeus for saying this?
Sarpedon is ‘destined by fate’ to be killed here (by Patroklos)
Sarpedon’s death:
he fell ‘like… a tall pine which carpenters cut down’
what does this simile suggest about his death?
Sarpedon’s death was fated and inevitable.
Why does Apollo knock Patroklos as he climbs the wall 3 times?
‘It isnt fate for the Trojans’ city to be be sacked by your spear
