The hypothalamus Flashcards
1
Q
Diencephalon NB!!
A
2
Q
Embryological development of the hypothalamus
A
- Develops from the diencephalon (from Forebrain)
- Hypothalamic sulcus divides the alar plate – dorsal (thalamus) and ventral (hypothalamic)
- 7th week
- Hypothalamus differentiates into nuclear areas

4
Q
The hypothalamus is located in the
A
ventral diencephalon and found underneath the thalamus
5
Q
The hypothalamus comprises
A
the floor of the third ventricle
6
Q
pituitary/ infundibulum stalk
A
The hypothalamus descends downward from the brain into a stalk – pituitary/ infundibulum stalk
–> This connects it to the pituitary gland
7
Q
Can be divided into 3 main regions, which contain?
A
- each region contains distinct nuclei and neuron clusters
Anterior(supraoptic) part
central part (tuberal region)
posterior part (mammillary region)
8
Q
Relationships of the hypothalamus:
A
- Sup= hypothalamic sulcus/thalamus
- Inf= optic chiasm, tuber cinereum, mamillary bodies
- Ant= lamina terminalis
- Post= tegmentum (midbrain)
- Med= 3rd ventricle
- Lat=internal capsule
