The hydrological key terms Flashcards
Evaporation
Water droplets are heated and become water vapour and rise
Soil moisture flow
Water flows horizontally through the soil towards the river
Groundwater Storage
Water fills in the cracks in the rock and is stored deep underground
Interception storage
Leaves and buildings catch rain as it falls and then stores the water
Precipitation
When the water falls as rain, snow, hail or sleet
Surface run-off
When the water flows across the ground straight into the river if it is very dry or wet
Condensation
As water vapour rises, it cools, and then it eventually turn back into water droplets
Infiltration
Water moves downwards into the soil from the surface
Soil moisture storage
Water fills the pores in-between the soil particles
Percolation
Water moves deep downwards into the permeable rock
Groundwater flow
Water flows very slowly horizontally towards the river through the groundwater rocks
