The Hydrological Cycle Flashcards
What are drainage basins?
The area surrounding the river from which the river system obtains its water- the catchment area. They are open systems with inputs and outputs.
What is the watershed?
The boundary of a drainage basin. An imaginary line which delimits on drainage basin from the next.
What are the inputs?
Precipitation; all the moisture that comes out of the atmosphere which is mainly rain but also, snow, hail, dew and frost.
What the stores?
Interception, vegetation storage, surface storage, groundwater storage, channel storage.
Interception?
When precipitation lands on vegetation or other structures, like buildings and concrete/tarmac surfaces before it reaches the soil. This is a significant in wooded areas, but it is only temporary because the collected water evaporates quickly.
Vegetation storage?
The water thats been taken up by plants- all the water contain in plants at any one time.
Surface storage?
Water in puddles (depresion storage), ponds and lakes.
Groundwater storage?
Water stored in the ground, either in the soil or in rocks.
What is water table?
The top surface of the zone of saturation (the sone of soil or rock where all the pores in the soil or rock are full of water)
What are aquifers?
Porous rocks that hold water.
Channel storage?
The water in a river or stream channel.
What are the flows and processes?
Surface runoff, throughfall, stemflow, infiltration, percolation, groundwater flow, base flow, interflow and channel flow.
Surface runoff?
The water flowing over the land. it can flow over the whole surface or in little channels. Common in arid areas where torrential rain falls on hard baked land.
Throughfall?
The water dripping from one leaf to another.
Stemflow?
The water running down a plant stem or a tree trunk.
