the human nervous system Flashcards
define nervous system
an organ system made up of nerves and neurones that transmit electrical signals around the body
define homeostasis
the maintenance of a constant internal environment in order to maintain optimum conditions for enzyme and cellular function
explain why homeostasis is important
maintains enzyme activity and cell function
give conditions that need to be controlled in the human body
blood glucose concentration, temperature and water levels
define stimulus
a change in the environment
define receptors
cells that detect stimuli
define coordination centre
areas that obtain and process information from the receptors
define effector
muscles or glands that respond to stimuli
define neurone
a specialised cell adapted to carry electrical impulses around the body
give 3 type of neurones
sensory, relay and motor
describe the role of a sensory neurone
carried impulses from receptors to the coordination centre
describe the role of the relay neurone
carries impulse across the CNS
describe the role of a motor neurone
carries impulses from the coordination. centre to effectors
define reflexes
rapid, automatic responses
explain why reflexes are so important
they keep us safe
