The human nervous system Flashcards
The brain is one of the components of the nervous system
.
The CNS coordinates the response of the effectors
.
The effectors are muscles or glands that act in response to a change in the internal or external environment
.
The spinal cord is the other component of the CNS as it is also important in coordinating the response of effectors in changes of environment
.
The neurones carry electrical impulses between the receptors, central nervous system and the effectors
.
The nervous system protects organisms from harm by responding to changes in the environment and it does this by coordinating communication of different parts of organisms
.
Synapses are gaps between neurones and can be found at each junction of a reflex arc
.
Neurotransmitters are chemicals that diffuse across synapses and bind to receptors on the next neurone
.
A reflex action is an unconscious response that allows a human to respond to a dangerous situation automatically via the reflex arc
.
The Components of the reflex arc are the Stimulus, Receptor, Neurones, Effector and response
.
Neurotransmitters are chemical signals
.
Nerve impulses need to travel across synapses
.
The electrical impulse reaches the end of the neurone before the synapse which triggers the release of chemicals which are called neurotransmitters
.
Neurotransmitters move down the concentration gradient across the synapse
.
Neurotransmitters bind the next receptors on the next neurone
