The Human Ear And Simple Tests For Hearing Flashcards
The outer ear
Captures and funnels sound waves into the ear canal.
Composed of: pinna, ear canal, and eardrum
The middle ear
Air filled cavity that contains 3 tiny bones:
Malleus, Incus, Stapes
The Inner ear
Cochlea
Acoustic nerve
Vestibular or balance organ
Cochlea
fluid filled and contains components that send converted sound waves to the acoustic nerve.
Acoustic nerve
Sends signals to the brain by waystations along the auditory pathway
Pathways of sound
Air conduction - sound waves pas through outer, middle, inner ear.
Bone conduction - bypass the outer and middle ear by vibrating skull and stimulating the ear
Conductive hearing loss
Blockage on the outer/inner ear that stop sound waves from entering the cochlear
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Damage to the cochlear structure such as outer/inner hair cells and auditory nerve cells
Non-organic Hearing Loss
Hearing loss but is not due to deficits with the auditory system.
