How can Jesus say something like “the Father is greater than I”?

I can point to the president and accurately say he is greater than I am, because when he goes somewhere, he rolls with the posse. But is he any more human than I am? No. He’s greater in terms of role, but not in terms of essence.

He is greater in ROLE but not in ESSENCE. Just like my manager is greater than me in role but is not more human than I am.
