THE HOLY SPIRIT: Divine Person and Power Flashcards
Prophecy

Speaking in tongues
Holy Spirit speaking through men and women
Basil the Great
On the Holy Spirit
Filioque
addition of the word “and the Son” to the Nicene Creed; meaning that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son
Cessationism
the doctrine that the supernatural works of the Holy Spirit ceased at the end of the apostolic age when the canon of Scripture was completed
Renewalists
Pentacostals and charismatics believe that the neglect of the supernatural gifts of the Spirit resulted from the churches’ defection from authentic New Testament Christianity
Binitarians
a Christian theology of two persons, personas, or aspects in one substance/Divinity (or God). Classically, binitarianism is understood as a form of monotheism—that is, that God is absolutely one being—and yet with binitarianism there is a “twoness” in God, which means one God family
Paraclete
“another advocate” sent by Jesus after his ascension; sometimes referred to “Comforter” or “Counselor”, who is the “Spirit of truth” who will abide with them and be in among them (John 14:17)
Montanism
Montanus was a self-appointed Christian prophet whose ministry spanned the middle decades of the second century; spoke many prophetic utterances; “peripatetic [traveling] prophets”
Pneumatomachians
denied the deity and distinct personhood of the Holy Spirit, reducing the Spirit to a power of God
Didache
- one of the most ancient Christian writings outside the New Testament, the Didache or “Teaching of the Twelve Apostles”
Mormonism / LDS
a clear example of Montanism; teach that the theology of God’s revelation through Holy Spirit-inspired Scripture continues; the canon of Scripture is greater than the sixty-six books of the Bible; Bruce McConkie (Morman theologian)-“when the living oracles speak in the name of the Lord or as move upon by the Holy Spirit.. their utterances are then binding upon all who hear”; consider four texts Holy and binding and also leaves open the possibility of further scripture being written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit
