what are the laws and events that led to the dehumanization of the jews
NUREMBERG LAWS - 2 laws that excluded the Jews from german life, as well as take away some of their human rights.
1st law - designed to deprive the Jews of their German citizenship. Only germans or those with related blood were considered citizens from then on.
2nd law - forbade marriage or sexual relations between Jews and those of german blood.
DEHUMANISATION
-the process of making someone/group of people less than human and not worthy of humane treatment
- human rights violations
- the people/person are being treated in ways that would otherwise be socially unacceptable
Identify those groups that resisted the nazis
THE WHITE ROSE
-made up of uni students, handed out leaflets calling for social justice. eventually all members were executed.
THE SWING KIDS
-young people who would oppose in small ways; laze around, party, defy nazi dress code - boys + long hair, girls + makeup
THE EDELWEISS PIRATES
-youth movements, integrated boys and girls (nazis segregated). dressed like pirates (black, white, red)
WARSAW GHETTO RESIDENTS
-small ways of defiance, teaching children in secret, giving them books
what was the purpose and organisation of concentration camps
purpose - to dehumanize + demoralize. use them for forced labour.
organisation - starvation, same routine daily - punishment if not followed. no spoons for meals like soup - had to lick out of the bowl like dogs. jews were starved, disease spread, random executions.
descibe jews and the countries they sought refuge in
countries jews successfully fled to as refugees include NZ, britain, and Palestine. Some fled to other countries earlier, unfortunatly 100,000 jews had fled to countries that were later conquered by the nazis.
why + how do we remember the holocaust
why - history repeats itself. we need to learn from it so it wont happen again.
why - it would be insensitive to forget about something that affected millions of people and still affects millions of peoples emotions today. to honour those lost.
how - teach about it in school. education. write books. make movies. documentaries.
how - holocaust museum in the US, the anne frank house in amsterdam (museum)
